Special presidential committee to probe past irregularities at SriLankan

Colombo, July 2 (Daily  Mirorr) – The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the appointment of a Special Presidential Investigation Committee to examine alleged fraud, corruption, and irregularities that have occurred at SriLankan Airlines Limited and Airport and Aviation (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited over the past 15 years.

The government noted that while SriLankan Airlines contributes to the country’s economic activity, the financial burden of sustaining the loss-making national carrier has placed a considerable strain on the economy. Public expectation, the Cabinet observed, is for the airline to be transformed into a financially viable, efficient, and technologically advanced state entity.

To support this objective, the newly appointed committee is tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of past transactions and incidents to identify the underlying causes that led to the current financial difficulties of the national carrier.

The inquiry will also cover the operations of Airport and Aviation (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited, which manages the country’s airports, following concerns raised by various parties over the need for greater scrutiny of its activities.

The Special Presidential Investigation Committee will be chaired by former Auditor General H.M. Gamini Wijesinghe and is mandated to submit a detailed report with findings and recommendations on the alleged financial mismanagement and administrative irregularities that occurred during the period from 2010 to 2025.
