The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has finalized preparations, clearing two new Pakistani airlines, one passenger and one cargo, to begin operations soon.
According to airport sources, a new airline called Karachi Air has finalized plans to lease aircraft and is expected to formally launch operations in May or June this year.
At the same time, logistics company TCS is bringing in a Boeing 747-400 series aircraft. The aircraft will initially be used exclusively for cargo operations.
Meanwhile, K2 Airline, which is already operating cargo services, is expanding its fleet by acquiring another Boeing 747-400 series aircraft.
With these developments, air cargo growth within Pakistan and on international routes from Pakistan is expected to increase significantly. Until now, foreign airlines have largely dominated the air cargo sector, but local companies are now entering the market and becoming key stakeholders.
Karachi Air will begin operations with domestic routes connecting Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi, Sukkur, Multan, Quetta, and Peshawar. After one year of operations, the airline is expected to expand into international routes.
Sources say that between 90,000 and 100,000 passengers travel daily from Pakistan. Currently, travelers rely on Fly Jinnah, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), and several foreign airlines, including carriers from the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, and other countries.
A spokesperson for the Pakistan Airports Authority said that all required facilities are being provided to support the launch of the new airlines.
