Cyber scam targets Pakistani Airline passengers, Rs7,000 stolen

ISLAMABAD: A shocking case of cyber fraud has come to light, revealing how scammers are exploiting Pakistani passengers amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

The passenger fell victim after researching airline ticket prices for international flights. While reviewing options, he received a WhatsApp message and file from a number displaying the PIA logo, claiming that he had been selected for special discounts on international flights.

He downloaded and opened the file, only for his mobile phone to be hacked. Within moments, over Rs7,000 was stolen from his EasyPaisa account.

The current geopolitical situation is not only disrupting flight schedules but also creating opportunities for scammers to target desperate passengers. These cybercriminals impersonate airlines, especially PIA, sending fake messages to lure citizens into their trap.

PIA clarified that the company does not send such offers through phone calls or messages or request personal information. Passengers should rely solely on PIA’s official websites and authorized channels for discounts.

Cybercriminals are constantly adapting their strategies to maximize the number of victims. In these cases, hackers contact individuals, claiming that they have applied for a discounted ticket and are now eligible for a special offer. To claim this, they are instructed to install an application and enter personal data.

Passengers are advised to always follow the official airline’s procedures and avoid downloading unknown files, links, or applications or providing personal information to unverified sources.
