An agreement with a Japanese consortium to operate the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is likely to be signed by the end of August or the first week of September of this year, said Air Commodore Abu Sayeed Mehboob Khan, member (Operations and Planning) of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh.

“Under the agreement, the Japanese company will only operate the third terminal. They will have no opportunity to operate the first and second terminals,” he said while responding to questions from reporters at a workshop at the aviation authority’s headquarters today.

Mehboob Khan said the authority is aiming to inaugurate the terminal on 16 December, subject to the completion of all remaining formalities.

The agreement will be signed before the inauguration and the final decision on the opening will be taken after that, he added.

The third terminal has remained idle for nearly 19 months due to disagreements over management and revenue sharing between the aviation authority and the Japanese consortium – comprising Japan Airport Terminal Company, Sumitomo Corporation, Nippon Koei, and Narita International Airport Corporation, Mehboob said.

The issues were mostly resolved following a series of negotiations after the BNP-led government took office, he said.

Meanwhile, the aviation authority has taken strict measures against unauthorised drone operations around the airport because of security concerns, the civil aviation member said.

He advised those intending to operate drones in such areas to carefully study and comply with the relevant rules and regulations before flying them.

Air Vice Marshal Md Mostafa Mahmood Siddiq, chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, and others were present at the event.
