Biman set to sign deal for 10 Airbus aircraft today

Biman Bangladesh Airlines is set to sign an agreement to buy 10 Airbus aircraft on Wednesday (October 7), bringing its planned purchases from Airbus and Boeing to 35 jets as the national carrier modernises its fleet.

The proposed Airbus order comprises four A350-900 widebody aircraft and six A321neo narrowbody jets. The signing ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden hotel.

Biman said government officials and representatives of the airline and Airbus would attend the event. The value of the agreement has not been disclosed.

The A350-900s are intended for long-haul international services, while the A321neos would serve regional and medium-haul routes.

The planned purchase follows two Boeing orders placed this year for a combined 25 aircraft.

The first agreement, signed on April 30, covered eight 787-10 Dreamliners, two 787-9s and four 737-8s. A second order, announced on September 23 on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, added five 787-10s and six 737-8s.

Together, the Boeing orders and proposed Airbus agreement would cover 19 widebody and 16 narrowbody aircraft.

The purchases are intended to support both fleet replacement and expansion. They would not necessarily increase Biman’s operating fleet by 35 aircraft, as older planes could leave service before the new jets arrive.

The introduction of Airbus aircraft would also require preparations for crew training, maintenance and operational support alongside Biman’s existing fleet.
